This Northern Lights Snowmobile Safari offers an active evening experience in Rovaniemi. The program combines snowmobile driving through the Arctic wilderness with a dedicated search for the Aurora Borealis. The tour takes you away from city lights to find the best spots for admiring the sky, with the white snow reflecting extra light from the stars and moon.
The program duration is approximately 3 hours, including preparations and breaks.
Participants drive snowmobiles at night through the picturesque, snow-covered wilderness surrounding Rovaniemi. Our expert guide will lead you along pristine trails, across vast frozen lakes and rivers, to optimal sky-watching locations away from urban light pollution. The riding time on snowmobiles is approximately 1 hour and 30-40 minutes. The average speed during this tour type is regulated for safety.
A guided stop is made in the wilderness. The guide will light a campfire. Participants enjoy a picnic that includes grilling traditional Finnish "makkara" sausages and drinking Lappish berry juice. During this break, the guide shares stories regarding the Northern Lights. This location provides an opportunity to relax while waiting for the Northern Lights to appear.

To drive a snowmobile in Finland, you must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid driving license that entitles you to drive a car — typically category B (passenger car or van).
Please also make sure you meet Finland's age and health requirements for driving.
The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, and unfortunately, their appearance can never be guaranteed. Our guides do everything possible to maximize your chances, including checking forecasts, choosing the best locations, and sharing their expertise about the Aurora.
However, the cost of the tour covers much more than just the chance to see the lights - it includes professional guiding, transportation, hot drinks, campfire experiences, storytelling, and the unique atmosphere of being in the Arctic wilderness at night. For this reason, refunds are not provided if the Northern Lights do not appear.
We truly appreciate your understanding and hope the overall experience will still be a magical and memorable part of your Lapland adventure.
Yes, all snowmobiles are insured, but the driver is financially responsible for any damage caused. In case of an accident, the flat-rate self-liability is €900 per driver. You can reduce this liability to €200 per accident by purchasing an optional self-liability waiver:
This option is available during check-in before the safari begins. We strongly recommend it for peace of mind.
No prior experience is needed! This safari is beginner-friendly. Before the ride, your guide will give clear safety instructions and a driving briefing. Most guests ride snowmobiles for the first time, and it’s easier than you might expect.
Please be on time! Our tours follow a strict schedule, and if you miss the hotel pick-up, you will not be able to join later. Arriving separately by taxi or private car is usually not possible, as it may disrupt the program and group safety. Plan ahead — we appreciate your understanding.
The Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) are a natural phenomenon and their appearance can never be guaranteed. Their visibility depends entirely on clear skies (lack of cloud cover) and sufficient solar activity. Our tours are meticulously planned during the optimal season and take you to prime viewing locations away from city light pollution to maximize your chances, but nature remains unpredictable.
We specialize in small-group snowmobile tours to ensure a more personal and high-quality experience for every guest. Typically, each guide leads a group of up to 7 snowmobiles. During high season, group sizes may be slightly larger, but in such cases, we always assign an additional guide to maintain safety and comfort throughout the tour.
For most of our snowmobile tours, we provide high-quality thermal outer clothing to keep you warm and safe during the adventure. This includes a thermal overall, winter boots, mittens, a balaclava, woolen socks, and a helmet. A scarf is also available if needed.
You're welcome to wear your own winter clothes and boots if you prefer, but we strongly recommend using our gear - it’s specially designed for Arctic conditions and will keep you comfortable even in very cold weather.
Underneath the thermal suit, we recommend wearing your own thermal underwear, fleece or wool layers, and sport or ski socks. If the temperature is below -15°C, you may also wear your own jacket underneath the overall for extra warmth.
Snowmobile safaris can be physically demanding and involve vibrations that may not be safe for everyone. For safety reasons, we do not recommend this tour for pregnant women, as the snowmobile ride or sledge pulled by a snowmobile may cause discomfort or potential risk.

If you have any pre-existing health conditions (such as heart disease, asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, or back/hip problems), please consult your doctor before booking. Participation is at your own risk, and it’s important that you feel confident in your ability to take part.
If special arrangements are needed (such as separate transport), additional costs may apply.
We also highly recommend personal travel insurance, as our liability only covers damages under Finnish law and motor vehicle insurance.
Yes, absolutely! Most of our snowmobile safaris are suitable for children aged 4 and up (please check the specific age recommendations on each tour page).
For safety reasons, children under 7 years old must ride in a covered sleigh pulled by the guide’s snowmobile. Only the guide is allowed to pull the sleigh, as it requires special experience and skill.
If your child is at least 140 cm tall, they can ride on the snowmobile behind an adult - in this case, the child is charged the adult price.
We always prioritize the safety and comfort of our younger guests, so feel free to contact us if you're unsure about which tour best suits your family.
Ride through snowy fields in a traditional reindeer sleigh, enjoy hot drinks by a fire, and search the skies for the magical Aurora. Includes pickup, guide, and a reindeer driver’s license!
Experience ultimate Northern Lights viewing with Rovaniemi's Aurora Pass. Our expert guides use a "go where sky is clear" strategy, offering nightly tours (3-5 days) to prime spots. Includes campfire, tips & comfort.
